PIP Invests For Future Success with Presstek 34DI

Environmental Credentials Critical In London Operation’s Buying Decision

August 2010

West Drayton, UK, August 2010—Creating a brighter future – both financially and environmentally – was the reason UK company PIP Printing and Marketing installed a Presstek 34DI press from Presstek, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRST), a leading supplier of digital and offset printing solutions to the printing and communications industries.

"It's an investment in the future," say owners Daphne and Tony Spikins, who operate two London West End branches of the global franchise that spans both sides of the Atlantic, the Middle and Far East and down into the Pacific. He explains the flexible and highly responsive press will help the operation significantly grow, especially its web-to-print business while minimizing its environmental impact.

"The 34DI is the right vehicle to drive our web-to-print technology and it allows us to produce high quality marketing collateral with minimal effects on the planet in a shorter time. With the new press we can keep pace with the most innovative technology and exciting capabilities of contemporary print technology. It is cleaner, quicker, produces better quality and consistency. It increases productivity and reduces workload."

And with end users seeking a wider range of print solutions from their providers, being able to produce a variety of coherent and brand aware products at a consistently high quality is essential. Tony expands: “Customers require a host of targeted material for a much more integrated approach to their marketing. The 34DI gives us the speed, accuracy and reliability we require to achieve this. It also provides us with an economical way of producing middle runs of 2,000 to 5,000 and an expansive substrate capability to allow us to cater for everything from leaflets and brochures to POS materials. We can print big solids with small reverse print and very fine screens now that we weren't able to do before. We're looking forward to having some fun with the machine's versatile capabilities such as the use of a wider variety of stock and some of the more 'exotic' options that can provide our clients with more innovative marketing material."

The operational impact of the Presstek 34 DI has already been noticed states Spikins: “It is easy to set up and run, extremely versatile and the quality of our print now is much better than we were getting on the traditional litho press. It provides fast turnaround and greater flexibility which is exactly what we need to deliver a competitive and efficient service in the market we are in.”

Time and costs savings have been achieved too: “Since its installation turnaround is much quicker. We have reduced the amount of waste paper we were getting from setup and makereadies, as well, as the DI takes just a 25 sheets or 90 percent less than our litho press.”

Spikins is also reassured by the convincing combination of waterless printing technology and chemistry-free platemaking. The former eradicates the need to constantly manage ink/water balance and enabling the press to come up to colour faster and maintain better consistency throughout the run while the latter eliminates the need for off line platemaking reducing VOC emissions and noxious chemicals handling. “This matches our ‘maximizing your marketing potential, while minimizing our impact on the environment’ philosophy,” he says.

“It’s becoming increasingly important to weave an environmentally friendly fabric through our work tapestry. We have all become aware of the need to reduce our carbon footprint and its individual and collective impact on the environment. At PIP we are committed to innovative sustainability practices and changing the way we do business to preserve natural resources by reducing waste. The 34DI is an essential element in our need to become eco-printers.”

The importance is underlined by the number of PIP’s high-profile clients that only deal with businesses with integrated environmental policy and practices. He adds: “Partnering with our customers is paramount to meeting our sustainability goals.”

Spikins operates two London branches of the business-to-business print on demand centre. Its services range from a full graphic design service and full colour flyer, brochures, business stationery, large format poster and plan printing to on demand books, presentation and document printing. It also offers graphic design services and a full range of finishing including binding, metal foiling, laminating, embossing, scoring, numbering and padding. The varied customer base includes local and national businesses, organizations and charities. There are nine employees.
